What happens during a DOT physical

A DOT physical is a health screening required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for anyone operating a commercial motor vehicle. It’s designed to confirm that a driver is physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to handle a CMV safely.

A CME performs your exam and includes a review of your health history along with a hands-on evaluation of your:

General appearance
Vision and hearing
Heart and lungs
Blood pressure and pulse
Extremities and range of motion
Mouth and throat
Nervous system and reflexes
Back and spine

Once your exam is complete, your CME reports the results to the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME). If you pass, you’ll walk out with your Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC) in hand.

It depends on your cargo and vehicle weight, as well as the route you are driving. Utah generally follows FMCSA intrastate rules, but certain exemptions apply to agricultural and short-haul operations. How long is my DOT medical card valid?

Most drivers are certified for up to 24 months, but your CME may issue a shorter certification if you have a condition that needs closer monitoring, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

What happens if I don't pass?

A few things could happen. You may be:

Certified for a shorter period
Referred for further evaluation
Denied certification until a condition is addressed

Your CME will explain exactly what’s needed and can often recheck you once it’s resolved.

I'm a new patient and only need the DOT physical, not ongoing care. Is that okay?

Yes. You don’t need to be an existing patient to schedule a DOT physical. Many drivers start with the physical and decide later whether they’d like Bonneville as their regular family practice.
